How to Maintain High Self-Esteem in an Industry That Can Sometimes Tear You Down

The entertainment industry is cut-throat. It’s often unfair, harsh and can sometimes leave you feeling really down on yourself. It’s hard to stay positive when you’re faced with rejection a lot. Sometimes it can make you feel like giving up and not following your dream. There are a few things that you can do in order to keep yourself feeling positive and maintain a good self-esteem while trying to make it in one of the hardest industries out there.

It can be hard to keep track of the good things in life when you’re facing rejections or people that are trying to cut you down. However, this is an important step in loving yourself. Stay grateful for the positive things in your life – friends, family, good health. Anything that applies to you. Write a list of things that you’re happy about and grateful for and keep it in a place where you know you’ll easily look at it. In this list, include things you’re grateful for to do with yourself for example ‘I’m grateful for my skills in a certain field.’ Whatever applies to you. Be honest with yourself and you’ll realise that there are a lot of things in your life worth being happy about.

In the entertainment industry, you are often competing with a lot of other people. These people often have a lot of similar qualities to you, hence why you’re always applying for the same roles. It can be so easy to fall into the trap of comparing yourself to these people and not favourably. The reality of this is that you cannot compare yourself to other people. You are different to everyone even if you’re both blonde, 5-foot-five and 120 pounds, can speak French and ride horses there are lots of other things that make you different from them. The more you understand yourself, the more you’ll see how different you are to other people and the more you’ll appreciate yourself for who you are, not who you are compared to someone else.

Negative relationships can be a drain on the ego. If you’re already struggling to maintain a healthy relationship with your own self-esteem being around negative people will not help. Make sure to cultivate relationships with those who support you, love you and have your best interests at heart. People who use you for their own gain will not make you feel great. They won’t be there in your times of need or to pick you up when you’re feeling down after an unsuccessful audition. People who do love you however, will be there to support you, with no hidden agenda. This will make you feel good about yourself, even when life is tearing you down. This is perhaps the most important thing you can do to maintain a good self-esteem as your friends and family will always be there when other people won’t.
