How to control nerves during an audition

Don’t Let Your Nerves Get the Best of You – 8 Tips to Combat Audition Anxiety

The truth is, auditions are inherently uncomfortable and nerve-racking. And yes, everyone gets nervous. However, it’s up to you on how you handle these so-called audition nerves.

The point is, every auditionee is aiming to ace other candidates and become the ‘chosen’ one.

If you allow your nerves to get the best of you, you won’t be able to take directions, show off what you got and ultimately you lose your chances in winning the audition.

So, how do you deal with audition anxiety? Here are 8 doable tips for you:

Come in well-prepared.

Come to the audition as early as possible. Rushing and coming in late can only add up to your stress. Be sure you’ve also rehearsed your lines, song pieces or your track.

Don’t forget to take a deep breath.

While in the waiting room, take deep breaths. Deep breathing helps relieve tension.

Mentally practice.

Have a mental rundown of your audition piece will be, this helps you reinforce your skills and draw all your attention to one of the most important minutes of your life.

Walk in with confidence.

As you approach the stage, do it with confidence. Even if you feel nervous, act like you own the stage – heads up, look people in the eye and relax.

Remove all your doubts.

“What if I mess up?” “What if they won’t like my performance?” Fear and nervousness are all but common during auditions. Even the best performers experience these.

Acknowledge that what you feel in the moment is normal but do not allow yourself to give in either.

Listen, listen, and listen. Keep your presence of mind.

So, you’ve rehearsed and memorize your piece. Once you’re in the audition room focus your self at the present situation. If you’re on a casting audition, think of it as a real conversation. Avoid anticipating the lines and pay attention to the audition team or your other character partners on stage.

Don’t put so much pressure on your self, remember to have fun.

If you are serious about your career journey, you need to embrace auditions as crucial parts to achieving your dreams.

As long as you do your part of coming in prepared and giving out the best you can offer, you should be fine. Learn from your mistakes and use them to your advantage for the next audition opportunity you can get.

Don’t be too hard on yourself with every audition you go through, this will only make your next auditions a more nail-biting experience for you.

Remember, throughout your career’s life you will have to go through a lot of auditions, so relax and have fun.

Create your own mantra.

“Today is my moment to shine!” or “This is going to be awesome.” Empower your self with a mantra to motivate you.

Prior to delivering your piece, take a deep breath and envision your mantra, you’ll be amazed at how this can help you relax and deliver your piece with confidence.
